Animal Welfare Law & The Eats Act with Gabriel Wildgen

Gabriel Wildgen, of The Humane League, helps us understand the EATS Act, the 2023 Farm Bill, and other important discussions happening now in animal welfare law. Episode 75 of the For Animals. For Earth. Show. https://ForAnimalsForEarth.com/show/75

Animal welfare law is a deep rabbit hole with many moving parts.  Gabriel Wildgen, Director of Public Policy for The Humane League, helps us understand the EATS Act, the Farm Bill, and other extremely important discussions happening right now that pertain to animal rights.

He urges us to reach out to our Congress representatives ASAP to ask that they do not support bills like the EATS Act, other laws that allow animal cruelty, or laws that rewind the progress we have made.

Background:

The EATS Act (Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression Act) is just one of many initiatives aimed at taking down Proposition 12 (Prop 12), which was passed in California in 2018.

Prop 12 significantly changed the way that animals can be raised for food in California.  In addition, it extended these rules to animals raised for food outside of California if that meat is sold in California.  This means that factory farms for pigs, chickens, and veal raised in other states, such as Iowa, are now held accountable to Proposition 12 as well.  Other states have passed similar laws, but because California is such a large market, this hit big agribusiness profits and ignited retaliation.

After appealing to many levels of court, the ability for states to make their own laws that impact business in other states was taken to the Supreme Court and upheld in May of 2023.  Opponents of Prop 12 have now moved their efforts to Congress.

There’s danger that they will successfully inject legislation into the 2023 Farm Bill that would undo decades of progress made in not only factory farm animal welfare but animal welfare law in general.  This includes cosmetic testing, puppy mills, force-fed foie gras, and the list goes on.

Time is running out to influence our senators and representatives to vote on the side of protecting animals.  There will be many parts to this new bill and with each draft it will be harder to remove anything that makes it in.

Please share this as widely as you can.  Like and comment where you watch or listen so that we can reach more people.  And click on the link to quickly contact your senators and representatives.  Thank you SO much.

Simple Ideas to Help:

1. WRITE TO OUR LEGISLATORS.  Not only about the EATS Act, but about all animal welfare law.  We need to make our voices heard and ensure that they know this is important to us, and to many other citizens in their assigned areas.  We can encourage them to block this dangerous bill here.  Remember to approach them with compassion!

2. TALK TO OUR FRIENDS.  Most people do not know that this is happening.  And polls show that 80% of people want stricter laws against animal cruelty.  Chances are that you could share this information with someone who will reach out and make a difference.  Power in numbers is super important right now.

3. PUT OUR MONEY INTO PLANT-BASED FOODS.  Stop giving our money to these industries who are doing these terrible things to animals and trying to take down these laws.  Put it into plant-based foods and companies who are working hard to change the industry.
