Fair and Fowl Ranking Report with Brooke Fane

The Fair & Fowl Ranking Report for the Global Travel Industry was recently released. Hear about the "good eggs" and the "bad eggs".

The Fair and Fowl Ranking Report is produced by The Humane League and Open Wing Alliance. About 100 animal welfare organizations come together to influence brands to only source cage-free eggs.  Once the pledges are made, The Humane League follows up to ensure that the brands are working toward their goals.

They rank brands who are transparent and reporting their progress with a favorable “good egg” rating. They rank brands who are not reporting and ignore their outreach efforts with a “bad egg” rating.  The Fair & Fowl Ranking Report for the Global Travel Industry was recently released.

Brooke Fane, Global Corporate Campaigns Coordinator for The Humane League, joined me in this episode.  We chatted about the various rankings and which travel brands are doing well or leaving something to be desired in their reporting.

We also talked about the Humane Hospitality Campaign which was so successful that the three companies who made changes (Hilton, Louvre Hotels Group, Melia International) from the campaign should ultimately impact 861,000 hens annually.  That’s 861,000 less animals suffering trapped in cages with about an iPad’s size footprint to live on.

Simultaneous to working on this episode, the USDA released their newest report showing that 40.2% of cage-free egg-laying hens in the United States are now cage-free.  This is the result of the collective efforts of The Humane League, their partner organizations, and consumers like us.

In this episode we talk about:

  • The Open Wing Alliance
  • The Fair & Fowl Ranking Report
  • How Cage-Free Pledges Are Made
  • How Data is Collected for This Report
  • The Heartless Hospitality Campaign
  • How Consumers Can Help
  • Future Reports
  • Vegan Chicken Riggies

Brooke's Vegan Chicken Riggies:

  1. Cook pasta of choice according to package instructions.  Traditional recipes use rigatoni.  Brooke likes bowtie best.
  2. Put crushed tomatoes, your favorite dairy free milk, and your favorite dairy free cream cheese into a saucepan and begin warming it.  When it’s warm and gooey, add nutritional yeast to taste.
  3. Chop garlic, red pepper, red onion, and cherry pepper.  Saute with oil until cooked to desired consistency.
  4. Combine everything.  You can add vegan chicken if you would like.  Just cook it according to the instructions and add it at the end.
