There are so many quick and easy ways to donate to our local animal shelters without spending a penny. And they fit into our daily lives! If you pick something from this list, reach out to your local animal shelter first, to make sure that they can use this specific type of donation. I’m sure that they will have even more ideas for you.
1. DONATE OLD TOWELS & BLANKETS:
Always wondering where you can find a second home for old blankets and towels? Local animal shelters! Local rescues. Local sanctuaries. A local refuge. All of these places that help animals go through towels and blankets quickly.
2. DONATE UNUSED MEDICINE & CLEANING SUPPLIES:
In my experience rescues can’t get enough cleaning supplies. The cleaning never stops! Ask what your local group can use, but ideas include bottles of cleaners that you have tried and didn’t like, paper and shop towels, or mops and sponges. In addition, check with your local shelter to see if they can make use of any pet medicine that you did not end up using. Flea and tick medicines may be a good candidate for this.
3. DONATE BOGO – BUY ONE, GET ONE:
Do you shop at a store that offers buy one, get one campaigns? If so, and you’re already buying an item in the campaign, grab the extra one and donate it to your local shelter or rescue. (Shout out to Christin from episodes 29 & 30 for this idea!)
4. FRUITS, VEGGIES, & PET FOOD DONATIONS:
Do you grow your own food? If you have a garden and have surplus vegetables or fruit, consider donating those to a local wildlife sanctuary. Did you buy pet food or treats that your animal doesn’t like? Those are perfect to donate while they are still fresh too.
5. GIVE FREE MARKETING:
You can donate marketing without spending a penny. Word of mouth is one of the easiest, and one of the best, ways to support local animal shelters. It costs a lot of money to advertise through traditional channels. But if a “super fan” of the rescue shares animals who need homes, shares campaigns, and shares opportunities to get involved, it goes a really long way.

6. DONATE OLD TOYS:

7. SHREDDED PAPER / NEWSPAPER:
Donate shredded paper or old newspapers to local animal shelters rather than tossing it into the recycle bin.
8. LEFTOVER WOOD & FENCING MATERIALS
These can be used to build enclosures for the animals. (Thank you Ame for that idea!)
